PARTYING LIKE
ITS 1959!
Plus: A cigar with explosive flavor . . . from
Hazardville, Connecticut!
Los Angeles, June 9 – The artist known as Prince and other
names and symbols immortalized the phrase “I’m gonna party
like it’s 1999" in his 1983 hit titled . . . “1999.” |
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
John Vogel will tell you, however, that he can
party like a cigar smoker from 1959! |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Vogel is the career agronomist who founded
Tabacos de la Cordillera in San Jose, Costa Rica to grow tobacco
from authentic, first-generation Cuban seeds dating back as far
as 1945. Collected over his more than 40 years in the tobacco
trade, his goal is to bring the rich flavors of Cuban harvests
long past to cigars made in the 21st Century. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
He introduced the
Cumbres de Puriscal lines last year (pictured above),
offering three different blends: Gold, Silver and Emerald. The
Gold has been the most popular so far, although the Silver is
the heaviest at medium-to-full in body. All three types are
offered in a full range of nine shaped. We decided to try the
Gold and see what the fuss is about. |

Cumbres de Puriscal Gold:
[Costa Rica: available in 9 sizes]
This is a medium-bodied cigar, but its refinement and balance
impress you immediately. |
|
| |
. |
|
| |
The cigars we tried were very well made, drew
easily and burned evenly throughout. There’s a gently
caramelized aroma that’s inviting and it enhances the lightly
caramelized flavor profile. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
There’s never even a hint of bitterness and the
delicate taste slows you down so that you can appreciate it
more. In its flavor and depth, it reminds one of the Cuban Juan
Lopez brand, which we have found is among the very best
medium-bodied cigars on the planet. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Best of all, the taste and strength remain
consistent throughout the cigar, relaxing the smoker. The finish
is fairly short, but is not a drawback; you simply wait for the
next puff. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The taste settles down a bit in mid-course and
there is just a hint of spice – only a tingle! – towards the end |
|
| |
|
|
| |
As good as advertised, the CdP Gold is
wonderfully made and very well priced at $3.25 to $5.90 retail.
Its only drawback is that it is only available online and not at
retail stores. Perhaps this will be corrected at next month’s
Retail Tobacco Dealers of America trade show in Las Vegas. It’s
the only thing wrong with this brand.
Overall grade: A: Exceptional. |

In addition to the Cumbres de Puriscal Gold, we
had a chance to try three other blends, also wedded to a
particular year! |
